I love hero shows and movies, having grown up watching the cartoon in the 90's I am especially fond of the X-Men. They along with Batman and Superman would be some of my favorite shows to watch.
The Gifted was both a delight and took the human/mutant conflict to the next level. It gave us some wonderful characters amazing special effects and had some political tones which could be painfully close to home in our current time.
The Struckers were unique. Although not mutant haters they did not know what it really meant to be a mutant. They enjoyed a safe and comfortable life, Reed helped prosecute mutants. He wasn't a bigot or hateful, but still he played a role in imprisoning many innocent people who were persecuted by an unfair justice system. But when Andy and Lauren were revealed to be mutants they suddenly found themselves in a very different situation and were forced to see the truth of things and how complacency can be just as bas as persecution.
I also enjoyed how the played with the Fenris lore, making Andy and Lauren related to Andrea and Andreas was a great touch and also helped them on their journey. Family and our past played a big role on the show, but how do we accept our past when there is a lot of pain and death involved.
Something Lorna and Marco could understand. Complicated families also played a role for them, both their past and future family was important and a sorrow. Lorna the daughter of Magneto, struggling with her bipolar condition and being the daughter of Magneto and Marco with his connections to the cartel and having been thrown out of his home when he was a young man. They found love and had a daughter but their decisions drove them apart for a time but they never stopped loving one another.
Blink too had a complicated past, having grown up in foster homes her mutation made life especially difficult for her as she was unable to blend in and faced a lot of persecution. Eventually she found a home and a family with the Underground.
Even John was well written. Chosen by the X-Men, burdened with the responsibility of leading the Underground he faced many defeats and personal losses but kept on going for his people.
Even Jace offered a unique perspective. While a villain he was shaped by his own personal tragedies and the decisions he made although came from a place of good led him further and further down a dark path. Love him or hate him Jace offered a good balance in comparison to the mutant characters.
The Gifted took the human and mutant conflict and took it to the next level, truly showing how terrible bigotry and racism can make the world. We all know this terrible truth all to well and the Gifted had many parallels with real life events. We truly saw a side of this conflict not often seen in the movies. The conflict was bad it was much worse on the Gifted and every episode had a sense of underlying fear of being hunted and captured or worse killed. It was easy to see why some characters were forced to make some difficult decisions in order to survive.
The Gifted was a wonderful show and I am saddened to hear of its cancellation. I am especially saddened to see it end on a cliffhanger and wish we could get one more season to wrap things up. In the days that come maybe we can get some good news and see the ending this wonderful show deserves.
